If you want to live in Mexico for an extended period of time, you will have to take care of a few legal matters when you arrive. You will need to go into the Mexican consulate and prove to them that you have enough money to take care of yourself for the next five years. If you have a criminal record, that might not be the best idea though. The jails in Mexico can be very difficult and you might be forgotten down there.
If you want to work in Mexico you will want to get an FM3 visa and after five years you will be able to get a FM2 which is much like a green card in the states.
If you cannot prove you have the income to stay in Mexico, you can go on a 180 day tourist card and then you will have to leave for few days and reapply for another tourist card. It is fairly simple to do and most of the time no one is waiting to kick you out of the Country. It is not easy to work while there and the jobs available pay very little. There is certainly a lot to consider before moving to a foreign Country such as Mexico. Make sure you understand all your options before you cross the boarder and enjoy your time and remember it is better to do it legally.
